Family Photography at Balboa Park: Why I Love This San Diego Location

Balboa Park is one of those San Diego locations that never seems to run out of possibilities.

And that's exactly why I love photographing families there.

You can start in one area and, without traveling very far at all, create photographs that look completely different from one another.

Architecture.

Gardens.

Trees.

Open spaces.

Interesting textures.

Beautiful light.

And lots of room for families to move.

I don't want your entire gallery to look the same

One of my goals during any family session is variety.

I want photographs of the whole family.

I want photographs of the kids together.

I want individual portraits.

I want parents together.

I want the little in-between moments.

And I want different backgrounds and compositions.

Balboa Park makes that possible.

We can move from architecture to greenery to an open area and create an entirely different feeling without spending half the session driving from one location to another.

There's something for kids to explore

Just like a trail or the beach, Balboa Park gives children things to look at and explore.

And that matters.

Because again, I don't want to spend an hour telling kids to stand still.

I want them moving.

Walking.

Looking around.

Talking.

Interacting with their parents.

Doing the things kids naturally do.

And while they're doing that, I'm photographing.

The architecture gives us a completely different look

If you love a more polished or editorial feeling, the architecture in Balboa Park gives us plenty to work with.

The buildings, arches, details and pathways create beautiful lines and backgrounds.

We can create more traditional portraits here, but I still like to keep the session moving.

A beautiful background doesn't mean everyone needs to stand in front of it and smile.

And then we can disappear into the greenery

One of my favorite things about Balboa Park is the contrast.

We can have a photograph with architecture and strong lines, and then a few minutes later be surrounded by trees and greenery.

That variety creates a gallery that feels much more complete.

It also means that if someone isn't comfortable in one particular setting, we can change things up.

What about the light?

Like any outdoor session, light matters.

I'm always looking at where the sun is, how it is hitting the location and where we can find the best combination of light and background.

That's one of the reasons I don't simply choose a location based on a list of "pretty spots."

The light can completely change a photograph.

And sometimes the most ordinary-looking little corner has the most beautiful light.

Balboa Park is great for families who want variety

If you know you want more than one type of photograph, Balboa Park is a great option.

Maybe you want a beautiful family portrait.

Then some playful photographs of the kids.

Then something more candid.

Then a few photographs of Mom and Dad.

Then the kids together.

We have room for all of that.

And because we're walking and moving, it doesn't feel like we're constantly stopping to pose.

Your family is still the most important part

As beautiful as Balboa Park is, I don't want the location to take over the photographs.

The architecture isn't the reason you should look at a photograph ten years from now.

The background is not what you'll miss.

You'll miss your child's little hand in yours.

You'll remember how tiny they were.

You'll remember the way your daughter laughed.

You'll remember what your family looked like before everything changed.

That's what I'm trying to preserve.

Balboa Park simply gives me a beautiful place to do it.

And that's why it remains one of my favorite San Diego locations for family photography.
