High School Senior Photography Checklist

Senior year is a season of “lasts”—the last first day of school, the last school dance, the last time they walk the halls they’ve known for years. As a San Diego Senior Photographer, I can tell you: this chapter deserves to be documented in a way that truly reflects your teen’s journey.

Whether they’re outgoing or more reserved, into sports or theater, there’s something powerful about creating space to celebrate who they are right now. And that’s exactly what Senior Photos are all about.

If your teen is graduating this year, here's your quick and easy Senior Portrait Checklist to make sure everything goes smoothly (and stress-free!):

✅ Senior Photoshoot Booking Checklist

  1. Book early
Prime dates fill quickly—especially in spring and fall. Booking in advance gives you the most flexibility for outfits, locations, and weather.

  2. Choose the right photographer
Look for someone who understands teens, captures authentic emotion, and provides location + styling guidance. (Hi, that’s me! 🙋‍♀️)

  3. Pick a location that fits your teen’s personality
Think beachy sunsets, wildflower fields, downtown murals, or even a favorite coffee shop. I help families choose the perfect spot for each session - we have soooo many great locations for photos in San Diego! You can get a lot of inspiration by visiting my Instagram page.

  4. Plan 2-3 outfits
Casual, dressy, and something in between. Layers and textures photograph beautifully! I am always available to discuss outfits and five my input.

  5. Getting ready the day of the photoshoot
Make sure hair/make up/nails is all good to go for the photos. You don’t need to go over the top if that is not your style, but hair and nails, specially, should be clean.

  6. Don’t forget the details
Cap and gown, sports jersey, instrument, college swag—anything meaningful to your teen’s high school journey can be included!

Why These Photos Matter

This isn’t just about cute pictures (though, yes—we’ll get plenty of those). It’s about pausing to reflect on who your child has become and where they’re headed next. Senior portraits freeze a moment that passes in the blink of an eye.

Years from now, you’ll both look back and be grateful you captured this milestone.
